Community Economic Development

Edited by Eric Shragge

2nd edition, revised and expanded

Central governments and their economic policies rarely help economic develpment at the local level, taking more out of communities than they put into their growth and health. This book argues for an economy that works in cooperation with the social interest of the local community and that is at least partially controlled by it.

Revised and expanded, this edition of Eric Shragge's exploratory compilation brings us up to date on developments in the communities seen in the former edition. He looks at situations anew in terms of current contexts of community economic development, the new right wave, and the Chrétien government. Chapters on women; an African example and community ownership; marginalized people; and on community corporations in Cape Breton, have been added.
