In contrast with the current
tendency to see 'culture' only as an increasingly
commodified instrument of social control in the hands of
a power elite, the work collected in this volume reveals
cultural transformations occurring in the older social
movements, such as the labour movement and the churches,
and creative new energies being released in the culture
of the new social movements such as the women's movement,
the ecology movement and community organizations. The
diversity of the topics reflects the multiplicity of
political struggles. The editors correctly let the
chapters speak for themselves.
