Since we began publishing in 1970, history has moved in unexpected directions and in exciting ways.
One of the most unexpected, and exciting turn of events was the meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle and the very broad based resistance movement that forced the agenda of the politico-economic forces of globalization to be interrupted. Everyone was in the streets of Seattle, young, old, women, men, trade unionists, ecologists, human rights and social justice activists and on. A truly remarkable rainbow of human beings united in saying no! The agenda, it seems, may have shifted a bit in favour of fair trade from simply 'free trade'. This historical achievement largely by a new generation does not appear to be a flash in the pan. Then there was Washington, Denver, Windsor, Calgary, and in 2001 Quebec City. The opposition continues to organise and grow.
More than one commentator has remarked, and people directly involved in the new movement have also stated, that the new generation needs support. This support takes different forms, but one of the most important is encouraging a deeper understanding of what is happening in our society, and the world, and why. Alternatives must also be found while resistance is encouraged.
It has always been the mandate of BLACK ROSE BOOKS to provide those alternatives: to believe in and to publish new voices and ideas.
Hence we are appealing to you to help us financially. Many excellent manuscripts have to be refused every year because of lack of money. And many excellent books already published do not get the widespread exposure they deserve. While costs increase continually (e.g., cost of labour, cost of consultation, cost of paper and printing, cost of promotion and distribution), we struggle to maintain the price of our books at a reasonable and affordable level.
Based on numerous letters we have received, especially from younger readers, we are certain that the books we publish have contributed to a renewed social consciousness. And so as an alternative, non-profit book publishing project, we carry on, making available a rich selection of important books, as inexpensively as possible, knowing, that in this new situation, this is crucial.
Although BLACK ROSE BOOKS is distributed in many cities of the world, improvement is needed. The traditional book market alone cannot get the books we publish out there. Other means of communication are needed, including the internet. Help us spread a radical analysis and information to the new generation.
