He has been referred to as "thought-provoking", "controversial", as the "mercy killer of the avant garde." It has been said that he is "immune to institutions", that his work "proves that art criticism doesn't have to give you a sinus headache." The noted social anthropologist and author of Totemism and Savage Mind, Claude L‚vi-Strauss, wrote has written that his commentaries "represent an important contribution to the theory of art."

He is John K. Grande, a well-known art critic and writer. His reviews and feature articles have been published extensively. 1994 winner of Prix Lison Dubreuil for art criticism, a graduate in art history from the University of Toronto, his previously published Balance: Art and Nature (Black Rose Books), was a best-seller.
