IMPERIALISM AND IDEOLOGY

An Historical Perspective

John Laffey

An historical perspective and critical examination of popularly held views on imperialism and ideology.

An extraordinary collection of articles which argue that imperialism, whatever its origins, is driven by internal ideological objectives. Topics include French Imperialism in the 19th century; Lyonnais Imperialism in the Far East (1900-1938); French Far Eastern policy in the 1930s; racism and imperialism, as well as, an examination of the work of Auguste Comte; social psychology as political ideology, in the cases of Wilfred Trotter and William McDougall; economy, society, and psyche as in the work of Pierre Janet; and a look at modernism and postmodernism.

In Imperialism and Ideology, the culmination of many fruitful years of teaching,
researching and publishing, Laffey demonstrates a deep understanding of class prejudice, racism and sexual discrimination in the writing of history.
